Camp Ideas from 2021

2021 had a lot of firsts and was a great year in the new mess hall! Let’s look at some of the ideas that came from 2021:

Schedule Ideas

  • Move Bible “Hour” from 10:30 to 11

  • An hour long nap time

  • Build-in “skills” time

  • Relabel areas of the schedule to better reflect what the time is used for.

  • Have both classes in the morning and then have Bible Hour in the evening so both class topics can be covered in Bible Hour with campers knowing both classes’ stories.

  • Keep the classes the way they are so that kids are more awake during class and to allow our outside teachers to make it in the evening.

Various Ideas and Tweaks

  • Create House Teams and win points throughout the week (Think Harry Potter but Biblically themed) We would pair senior cabins with junior cabins or a mix. This should work really well with our 2022 theme!

  • More cabin vs. cabin competition style

  • Add to the clothes closet throughout the year. Specifically adding bed sheets, jackets/pullovers, and long sleeved shirts. We also needed larger sizes for our senior campers. Todd and Heather will be taking this on to create a list and keep it up. Need to find a location for it at Chapel Hill.

  • Counselors write notes on Thursday night during late hours to go in the Baptism Bibles

  • Change the theme nights to seasonal (award points for whoever dresses out the most) Cooks could vote on best costumes. Cooks, Alex, and a few others will discuss and make a decision.

  • Dedicated craft shack staff to assist Ashlyn (1 to 2 people) If you would like to help let Ashlyn know.

  • Cabin 1s have a minimum of 3 counselors each. We will plan on placing extra counselors as needed and as staffing allows. Let the director know if you have a need.

  • Allergy bands or “M&M” buttons for kids with allergies.

  • A net all the way around the volleyball and basketball areas. More of a camp Leatherwood Issue

  • Sell bug bracelets in the snack shack. Let’s add this to the list of drinks and candy

  • Be trauma informed. How do we listen and be supportive when camper’s have trauma that they are ready to share?

  • Sunday Night Camp Fire with S’mores

  • Have a place to wash hands before each meal More of a camp Leatherwood Issue

  • Shoot for 110 campers! That’s what we need to make it work so invite more people! If you have ideas for increasing our reach let us know!

  • Change is good but let’s keep some of the good “oldies” like skit night, lip sync, sweetheart kickball Sweetheart Kickball is coming back! We’ll see about the others.

  • Campers are requesting more serious topics be covered in a Bible Hour like setting covering things such as sex, addiction, etc. but in a way we could talk about it without the younger campers.

  • Go to a cashless system for snacks and crafts. Davis and Drew can help with this.

  • Promote cabin bonding since they seem to spread out during the day and only spend time together as a cabin at night.

  • Continue and refine the skills classes. Maybe advertise some of them before camp starts?

  • Look into hiring someone to clean the restrooms throughout the week.

  • Create a “Camp Leadership Counsel” to start planning earlier with a smaller group(s) of people.

  • Bibles for all the kids. Let’s see what we can do to send every camper home with a Bible.

  • Create a BIG reason for campers to stay until Friday morning. Let’s look at a Bible Hour on Friday, normal breakfast time, awards on Friday and let the parents know when the awards are happening.

  • Day Campers? 9 and older but make it known that they can be day campers. This will require planning.
